Last year, I started printing my dungeon again at 80 % scale, and I quickly realized: 40 kg of PLA doesn’t paint itself 😅.
I took this new project as an opportunity to try out a completely new, rather dark color scheme – this time with a focus on reproducibility, since I’ve received many requests from the community. For this reason, I worked with Citadel paints, even though they are quite expensive. That way, anyone can use these colors as a reference.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been priming tons of dungeon tiles in black (Exception: I went with regular acrylics for the primer) and have now completed most of the base painting. Now it’s time to push through the final stretch and gradually turn the photos into small tutorials for my blog.
Here comes the first part: a warm red-and-white scheme for my Castle Tiles, which still feels slightly worn and “stone-like” – a little splash of color in the otherwise monochrome layout. So let’s start adding some color 🙂
✨ Step-by-step look at the base colors of my Castle Tiles! 🏰
I’m going for a red / terracotta & white color scheme, giving the stonework a warm, slightly worn look.
These are just the foundations — details and washes maybe later!
Step-by-Step Guide for the Base Painting:
1️⃣ Prime in black – Canvas acrylic paint from Schmincke (affordable, but a bit glossy)
2️⃣ Add a few brown spots with Citadel Gorthor Brown to simulate sand and dirt
3️⃣ Paint the terracotta tiles with Citadel Tuskgor Fur – a nice warm red-brown tone
4️⃣ The “white” tiles are slightly darkened with Citadel Celestra Grey to achieve a natural, slightly worn look
